The future is now- Virtual Reality and VR Ready GPU's
Virtual reality is about to transform the world as we know it. Imagine walking through virtual worlds that seem so real, you feel like you’re actually there – whether it be your favorite game, a recreated moment of history or a far-flung holiday destination.
What is VR?
Virtual Reality (VR) is the use of computer technology to create a simulated environment.Unlike traditional user interfaces, VR places the user inside an experience. Instead of viewing a screen in front of them, users are immersed and able to interact with 3D worlds.
The first ever "VR giving experience machine" was created in mid 1960s. But that machine was just a basic prototype. Now due to progress in technology, we have many gadgets which take us in the virtual world.
How can I experience VR?
One may find VR headsets compatible with mobile phones or tablets. But the the game changer was the introduction of VR-Ready graphic cards by NVIDIA and AMD for PC's.
After the introduction of NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980Ti, many developers started working on high profile VR intense games and movies. The GTX 980Ti was the then Flagship card which "was" the best GPU in the market. It was taken over by the 10-series launched by NVIDIA in March,2017.
The minimum system requirements of a PC to run a VR based game are as follows:
Desktop Requirements:
- GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 or greater
- CPU: Intel Core i5- 4590 equivalent or greater
- Memory/RAM: 8GB RAM
- Video Output: 1x HDMI 1.3
- Ports: 3x USB 3.0
- OS: Windows 7 SP1 (64bit) or higher
- Driver: Oculus – 361.91 and newer HTC – 361.75 and newer
Notebook Requirements:
- GPU: GeForce GTX 1060 and above
- CPU: Intel Core i7- 6700HQ or greater
- Memory/RAM: 8GB RAM
- Video Output: 1x HDMI 1.3
- Ports: 3x USB 3.0
- OS: Windows 7 SP1 (64bit) or higher
- Driver: Oculus – 361.91 and newer HTC – 361.75 and newer
NVDIA is definitely making huge progress in its best-in-class GPU's.As mentioned earlier, the GTX 980Ti "was" the best GPU. But now, the all new GTX 1080Ti is the new flagship card with extreme gaming and VR performance. This GPU has broken all heights and records set by any gaming and VR machine till date. It gives 100% increase in performance than the old 980Ti and when combined with teamed up with a powerful CPU, such as the Intel core i7 - 7700K, it becomes just unbeatable.
What next?
One just cannot imagine a future better than the present in the field of graphic cards and Virtual Reality. Developers and researchers might come up with a concept which is better than VR. It might also happen that the current hardware won't be enough to execute the VR which will come in the future. But still, this generation of GPU's and VR technology will remain in the god books of tech-fans and we hope to see better.
